Zane Grey 100k and Highline Trail
Come explore one of the USA’s most rugged and challenging trails to run. For the past 30 years, some of the finest ultra runners have used this area to see what they’re made of. The Highline trail follows the Mogollon Rim, one of the defining geographical features of Arizona. The Mogollon Rim is a bluff at the southwestern edge of the colorado plateau. You will surely enjoy the Limestone cliffs and sandstone that define this area.
The Highline trail itself dates back more than 150 years when passages connected early settlers’ and pioneers’ homesteads. The natural beauty of the area is staggering, and one of the reasons that the Forest Service designated this trail as a National Recreation Trail in 1979.
The Zane Grey Highline Trail 100K is so rough and rugged that it’s almost exclusively suited to advanced ultramarathoners. This level of difficulty means that scoping out the trail to see if you can make the distance is a solid idea before signing up for an event.
So run this iconic trail with Aly. It’s the best way to “try before you buy.”
Enjoy a non-stop showcase of beautiful waterfalls, fields of wildflowers, berries, and a forest of maples as we run along the Horton Loop, one of the most outrageous hikes in Arizona’s Rim Country.
This run is strenuous but well worth it, taking on the Derrick Trail & part of the Highline Trail.
Payson Arizona (Stewart Pocket Loop)
Payson is the gateway to Arizona’s high country, offering outstanding recreation all year long. Locals call it “the Rim,” short for Mogollon Rim, the Colorado plateau’s very edge. Cutting across the state, the Rim is a beautiful destination for wilderness adventures.
This fantastic part of the US has captivated Western novelist Zane Grey and actor John Wayne’s attention. Gorgeous lakes dot the scenic mountains where the pine forest meets the canyons and deserts of lower elevations.
While many people know about Sedona’s Red Rocks, few are aware of Payson’s Pink rocks. The Stewart’s pocket area is the hidden gem that few non-locals get to experience. The views and the trail running are fabulous!
Barnhardt Trail 43 Waterfall
This trail has it all—cliffs, geological wonders, remarkable botany, and water in the desert! This trail also offers impressive views of the Rye Valley, framed by the mountains surrounding it.
The Barnhardt Trail is considered one of the “expressways” to the Mazatzals Mountains— the mountain range 30-45 miles northeast of Phoenix. It starts at the Barnhard trailhead and heads west to the ridge of the range. There you intersect part of the Arizona Trail and a network of trails that could keep even the highest-volume runners busy for years.
